Hypothetical and model performance

All portfolio returns shown on the site are model and hypothetical. They are calculated from each portfolio’s inception date forward, using closing prices, with dividends reinvested where applicable. They reflect what the portfolio would have returned if followed exactly from inception with no friction.

They do not reflect actual trading. They do not include:

• Brokerage commissions or transaction fees
• Bid-ask spread or slippage on entries and exits
• Borrowing or financing costs
• Taxes of any kind
• Account, custody, or platform fees

Actual results from attempting to replicate any portfolio would differ, sometimes materially — especially on higher-turnover strategies like Hot Ideas and Max AI Rating.

Past performance

Past performance — including the live, time-stamped record on this site — is not a reliable indicator of future performance. Strategies that have outperformed for years can underperform for years. The Mid-Term portfolio has beaten the S&P 500 since November 2023; that fact says nothing definitive about what it will do next year, or next quarter.

Backtests

Material in the Quant Lab section is hypothetical and based on historical data. Backtested results carry inherent limitations including:

• The benefit of hindsight in strategy construction and parameter selection
• The inability to fully account for the market impact of trading
• Universes that may exhibit survivorship bias
• Execution assumptions that may not hold in live markets
• The absence of real-world emotional factors that affect actual trading decisions

Backtested performance is never combined with live portfolio performance in any headline figure on the site.

What the AI does and does not do

The scoring system combines outputs from multiple language models and quantitative filters into a single composite score. It identifies patterns in historical and current market data. It does not:

• Predict the future
• Have access to material non-public information
• Have privileged insight into corporate actions or announcements
• Make judgments about suitability for any individual
• Flag its own uncertainty when it is wrong

The phrase “AI rating” on the site refers to a quantitative score, not a recommendation to buy or sell anything.

Concentration and risk of loss

Investing in securities involves the risk of loss, including the loss of principal. All portfolios on the site hold between 10 and 15 positions, which is concentrated relative to a broad index fund. Concentrated portfolios carry materially higher single-name risk. They can also underperform broader markets for extended periods.

Short-term ideas on TrendingStocks.info are even more concentrated and shorter-horizon, with correspondingly higher variance of outcomes.
